Tweak to Bypass Windows 7 error for upgrading RC to RTM version
windows 7 upgrade
With the Windows 7 final version released yesterday, it’s time to go
honky-dory upgrading your RC to RTM. But, wait a minute; this is not
something that you’ll be able to accomplish the regular way. Windows 7
checks your current version of Windows 7 copy is a pre-release version
or not. If the version is a pre-release copy (most probably) then the
upgrade is interrupted by an error message.
windows 7 upgrade tweak 1
The solution to this Windows 7 upgrade check is to manipulate a particular file inside Windows 7 to bypass the error message and proceed with the
upgrading.
IMPORTANT: There are a few things worth noting while you go for this Windows 7 Final release version upgrade.
a) Backup your files and go for a fresh install, and follows the steps carefully.
b) The RTM tweak works only if you are upgrading the Windows 7 Ultimate Edition version.
Follow the steps given below carefully to upgrade your Windows 7 RC to any retail version:
#1 Copy the contents of your Windows 7 DVD to your
Local Folder (any disk drive partition). For example, the screenshot
below shows the DVD drive Z: content being copied to X: drive.
copy dvd to usb
#2 In this copied folder search for the file cversion.ini; click on it and change the parameters 7233 to 7077.
cversion ini change 3
#3 Open the registry entry candidate box and navigate to the folder HKLM->Software->Microsoft->Windows NT->Current Version. Click on it and you’ll
see the registry entries in the right hand pane
win7 alter registry 4
Track down the registry entries named EditionID and ProductName, and
change these entries with the name of the version you wish to upgrade.
For
example, if you are upgrading the release candidate to RTM of Home
Premium then replace HOMEPREMIUM in EditionID, and Windows 7 HOMEPREMIUM for ProductName.
NOTE: Skip this step if upgrading to retail Edition of Windows 7 Ultimate.
#4 This is it, now run the setup.exe file and select the upgrade option when prompted.
